A scary situation unfolded off the coast of Massachusetts over the weekend involving a South Boston-bound cruise ship.

A crew member aboard the Norwegian Breakaway went overboard late Saturday night while the ship was returning from a weeklong trip to Bermuda. According to CBS News Boston, the incident happened about 12 miles off Cape Cod, near Wellfleet, and was captured on security footage.

A “man overboard” alert was issued onboard, and the ship immediately turned around as lifeboats and rescue crews were deployed. The U.S. Coast Guard responded with helicopters and additional support from Provincetown to search the area.

Despite hours of searching, the crew member was not located, and the search was later suspended pending new information.

The ship eventually made its way back to Flynn Cruise Terminal in South Boston, arriving later than expected due to the ongoing search efforts. The identity of the crew member has not been released, and it’s still unclear what led to the incident.
