Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick Resigns from Congress Amid Ethics Probe – L’union Suite

In a sudden development on Tuesday afternoon, U.S. Representative Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-Fla.) announced her immediate resignation from the House of Representatives, just hours before the House Ethics Committee was scheduled to hold a rare public hearing to consider disciplinary action against her.

The bipartisan committee had planned a 2 p.m. EDT session on April 21 to determine potential sanctions following its March 2026 findings. The committee concluded that Cherfilus-McCormick committed 25 of 27 alleged ethics violations, citing “clear and convincing evidence.” The possible penalties ranged from formal censure to a recommendation for expulsion from Congress.

At the center of the investigation were campaign finance concerns and allegations involving approximately $5 million in federal disaster relief funds. According to the committee, these funds—reportedly linked to FEMA overpayments to her family’s healthcare company—were improperly directed toward her 2021 special election campaign, as well as for personal and political use.

Cherfilus-McCormick represented Florida’s 20th Congressional District, a district that includes parts of Broward and Palm Beach counties and is home to a significant Haitian-American population. During her time in office, she served as co-chair of the Congressional Haiti Caucus and was widely recognized for advocating on behalf of Haitian communities. Her work included support for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian immigrants and vocal opposition to anti-Haitian rhetoric.

Notably, she made history as the first Haitian-American Democrat elected to Congress and remained the only Haitian-American serving in the House.

In her resignation statement, Cherfilus-McCormick criticized the ethics process, describing it as politically motivated. She stated that her decision to step down was made to avoid further participation in what she called “political gamesmanship.” Throughout the investigation, she has consistently denied all allegations, pleaded not guilty to a related federal indictment—including charges of wire fraud and money laundering—and resisted calls to resign from both Republican lawmakers and some members of her own party.

Her resignation effectively halts the Ethics Committee’s formal recommendation process and eliminates the need for a House floor vote on potential expulsion. It also brings an abrupt end to her tenure as representative of the district, where she had been seeking a fourth term.

This development adds to a growing list of congressional departures tied to ethics investigations. Her exit follows the recent resignations of Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) and Tony Gonzales (R-Texas), both of whom stepped down earlier this month amid separate probes.

As the situation continues to unfold, the resignation of Cherfilus-McCormick marks a significant moment for both Florida politics and the Haitian-American community she represented.
