According to VicScreen, the production stood out for “the originality of its voice, the strength of its storytelling, and its clear potential to translate to screen”.
The newly established award aims to spotlight emerging talent capable of following in the footsteps of comedians-turned-screenwriters including Kitty Flanagan, Nazeem Hussain, Kate McLennan and Kate McCartney.
VicScreen CEO Caroline Pitcher said the initiative builds on the festival’s long-standing role in developing Australian comedy.
“Melbourne International Comedy Festival has spent forty years making Melbourne the comedy capital of Australia and we are thrilled to partner with them to find standout comedy talent that the screen industry should put on their radar.
We were blown away by the extraordinary depth of Victorian comedy voices and look forward to creating more opportunities to bring their humour and storytelling to the screen.”
Melbourne International Comedy Festival Artistic Director Susan Provan AO described Lewis as a worthy first recipient, pointing to the strength of the broader comedy sector.
“Congratulations to Bron Lewis, a truly deserving recipient of the inaugural VicScreen Greenlight Award.
The breadth and quality of shows considered for this award is a testament to the strength of our comedy community right now — bold, diverse and brimming with ideas.
It’s incredibly exciting to see that talent recognised and supported by VicScreen.”
Lewis has rapidly emerged as a prominent voice in Australian comedy, first gaining national attention in 2022 as co-winner of the RAW Comedy competition. She followed this with a Melbourne International Comedy Festival Best Newcomer nomination in 2023 for her debut show Probably.
Her subsequent shows — Obviously (2024), Who’s Talking?! (2025), and now Chaos (2026) — have continued to build her profile, with her work often drawing on experiences from motherhood, teaching and her upbringing in Canberra.

Beyond the stage, Lewis has appeared as a regular guest on Network 10’s Have You Been Paying Attention? and performed on Thank God You’re Here, while also working as a writer on The Project. She is also set to appear in the upcoming ABC sketch series URZILA.
The VicScreen Greenlight Award is expected to be presented annually as part of ongoing efforts to identify and develop Australian comedy talent for the screen.
