The humble corner chicken shop is a true Australian institution – a place that has stood the test of time, dishing up fail-safe favourites for decades. It’s the kind of comforting go-to that promises an easy dinner, satisfied cravings, and something guaranteed to please just about everyone.
But for locals in Lockleys, that staple is about to disappear. Crowd-favourite takeaway spot Cheeky Chook will close its doors this April – and the loyal community it’s built over seven years is, understandably, heartbroken.
Originally opened by celebrity chef Adam Swanson – known for his appearances on Everyday Gourmet, Ready Steady Cook, Good Chef Bad Chef and Open Homes Australia – Cheeky Chook quickly made a name for itself with it’s reimagined take on the classic chicken and chips. Picture a good old-fashioned corner chicken shop. Now give that image a fresh coat of paint and combine it with the genius of a renowned chef, and you’ve got a match made in heaven.
Their chickens? You could taste the difference. They spent 24–48 hours drying in the fridge, resulting in crispier skin and juicier meat.
Their burgers? A standout, packed with fresh ingredients and lovingly wrapped in a soft bun, they kept customers coming back.
But the pièce de résistance, of course, was their twice-cooked chips. Spectacularly crispy yet pillowy-soft inside, they earned acclaim around Adelaide as some of the best chips in the State.
After five years under Swanson’s direction, the business changed hands in 2024. Long-time collaborators Adam Talbot and Jimi Hinter took over, continuing the shop’s strong reputation and loyal following. But as economic pressures mounted and the cost-of-living crisis tightened its grip on small businesses, the pair were faced with a difficult decision.
In a statement shared to Facebook, they announced the closure…
“After heavy thoughts and crunching numbers we have made the sad decision to close our shop on the 25th of April.
“It hasn’t been easy this year and with costs rising and customers dwindling with the cost of living crisis we just can’t continue operating.
“We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our loyal customers and friends we’ve made along the way, your support is what has kept us going for 7 years”
The customer response speaks for itself- Cheeky Chook will be dearly missed.
“Please get your chicken meatballs into supermarkets. They are THE BEST THING EVER! I miss them all the way from Perth,” one fan wrote. Others called it “the best quality takeaway”, while many agreed that Cheeky Chook served some of the ‘best hot chips’ money can buy.
In the meantime, Adam and Jimi are inviting customers to drop by for one last goodbye. It’s the perfect excuse to treat yourself (and give in to your favourite, little guilty pleasure) – come and get your hands on these salty, crispy, crunchy favourites before it’s too late!
