The Punjab government has approved the construction of two underpasses worth Rs. 3.08 billion on GT Road in Gujar Khan, according to officials.
Officials from the Punjab Highway Department said one underpass will be built at Guliana More, while the second will be constructed near the Technical Training College. The project aims to improve traffic flow within the town and reduce the frequency of accidents on the busy highway.
As part of the project, the local administration has already demolished several structures, including the Police Khidmat Centre, public toilets, and kiosks. Authorities plan to remove more than 315 additional kiosks and other buildings to clear the right-of-way required for construction.
The planned demolitions have raised concerns among small traders operating micro-scale businesses in these kiosks, many of whom fear losing their primary source of income.
The traders have appealed to Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, urging the government to allocate land for the reconstruction of kiosks and small shops for affected vendors so they can continue earning their livelihood in a dignified manner.
