Pantry on Prospect is about to give one of Adelaide’s busiest dining strips another serious drawcard, with culinary duo Themis Chryssidis and Callum Hann opening their new neighbourhood restaurant, which happens to double as a pantry, on Prospect Road.
The duo are already well established in Adelaide’s food scene, known for Sprout Cooking School and popular venues Roma and Olive. Callum is quite well known to many from his time on MasterChef, as runner-up on MasterChef in 2010, and later winning MasterChef Australia All Stars in 2012.
The new venue blends a sit-down restaurant with a pantry-style space, giving locals the option to settle in for breakfast, lunch or dinner, or drop by for a coffee, pastry and a shelf browse on the way through.
“We’ve built the menu around some of our favourite products and the producers behind them,” said Callum.
“It’s a fun challenge, having no cuisine boundaries means the menu needs to work harder to make sense and flow, but that’s what makes it exciting.”
What makes POP distinct is its Pantry to Plate philosophy.
Rather than starting with a cuisine and building a menu around it, Themis and Callum reverse-engineered theirs, beginning with the South Australian producers and products they love most.
“This is about showcasing South Australia, on the menu, in the pantry, on the wine list and in the cocktail list,” said Themis. “We want POP to be a place where locals feel genuinely welcome.
“Somewhere that satisfies a desire for great food and a real connection to the producers who grow and make it.”
That approach extends across the menu, pantry, wine list and cocktails, all designed to make the connection between maker, ingredient and plate feel immediate and tangible.
“Our goal is to create a real hub for the Prospect community, not just a place to eat, but a place to connect.
“That’s what we’re striving for from day one.”
For locals, the appeal looks pretty obvious, and Prospect has been seeing a list of new venues popping up, that are positioning the suburb as a great foodie hotspot.
POP is aiming to be a genuine neighbourhood hub, and if the hospitality duo get the balance just right, Prospect could have a new go-to on its hands just in time for autumn dining season.
