Gouger Street brewery, known for its house-made Rakija, to close its doors five years after launch

“Instead of quietly closing our doors, we’re choosing to celebrate everything this place has been, and everything it still is, right until the very end.”

Gouger Street staple Silver Brewing Co has announced it will be saying doviđenja to customers in just over three months’ time.

Since opening in 2021, the brewery has carved out a loyal following with its bold Eastern European menu and in-house spirits, a far cry from the usual Adelaide eateries we see.

Sorry vegetarians, this one was never really for you. Silver Brewing Co built its reputation on indulgent hearty feasts, “rich with an extravagant spread of juicy meats”, paired with what they proudly described as “an array of the finest drinks this side of Valhalla.”

Their spirits, from the usuals like vodka and gin, to European staple rakija, take you straight to a Serbian kafana, clinking shot glasses with your mates.

It was a niche they fully leaned into. A distinctly Serbian-style celebration that’s hard to come by in Adelaide. From their Viking-inspired Valhalla events (complete with pagan flair, pints, and spit-roasted pig), to seafood feasts and late-night disco parties, the team knew exactly how to create an experience, and we’re sure they’ll leave quite a mark when they go.

In a Facebook post announcing the closure, the team thanked their customers but assured them they weren’t leaving without a bang.

“This place has never just been about food and drinks. It’s been about the people, the atmosphere, the laughter, the long nights, and the memories we’ve created together.

“So instead of quietly closing our doors, we’re choosing to celebrate everything this place has been, and everything it still is, right until the very end.”

“For the next 13 weeks, every weekend will be something special.

“The fire will be on, serving up the charcoal-grilled feasts you know and love, alongside cellar door sales featuring small-batch, handcrafted spirits from Pete’s Distilling Co,” the post said.

“These are limited releases, once they’re gone, they’re gone.”

“Our goal for these final weeks is simple.

“To make sure every single person walks away happy, to give this place the send-off it truly deserves, and to share these last moments with all of you who made it what it is,” they wrote.

The team behind Silver Brewing Co is no stranger to reinvention, having previously owned Kafana on Gilbert Street before it closed down, another Serbian-inspired favourite. So we’re sure this won’t be the last we’re hearing of them.

Anyone who’s ever tucked into ćevapi or pljeskavica knows that this cuisine is really something special – hearty, unapologetic, and in your face. You can’t help but admire their tenacity and punch. It’s a loss for Adelaide’s dining scene, and one that leaves a noticeable gap.

Here’s to hoping this isn’t the last we see of the Silver Brewing team.

In a city that prides itself on being diverse and playing host to cuisines from all pockets of the globe, Eastern European food, for all its noise and character, still deserves more of our attention.

In the meantime, don’t miss your chance to celebrate with the team in their final months.

The team themselves put it perfectly – “if you’ve ever said, ‘We should go there one day’, this is your sign.”
