Jaume Guardeno, 23, airlifted to hospital after crashing into car as team issues health update

Spanish cyclist Jaume Guardeno remains in intensive care following a serious collision with a vehicle during a training session on Tuesday.

The 23-year-old, who competes for Caja Rural-Seguros RGA, was transported by air ambulance to Tauli Hospital in Sabadell after sustaining significant injuries in the incident.

His team confirmed on Thursday that the promising rider is being treated in the intensive care unit.

Medical staff continue to assess his condition.

The accident occurred just days after Guardeno had competed in the Volta a Catalunya, one of Spain’s premier World Tour stage races, which concluded on Sunday.

According to reports, Guardeno struck a stone on the road surface.

This then caused the rider to lose control of his bicycle before crashing into an oncoming car.

The Alicante-born rider, who resides in Caldes de Montbui, is understood to have sustained a serious head injury in the collision.

He finished 14th overall in what was a highly promising debut at the Grand Tour level.

The young Spaniard placed 29th in the Tour of Catalonia last week, demonstrating his continued development as a competitive rider.

His strong showing at the Vuelta had positioned him as a leading candidate to represent Caja Rural-Seguros RGA at the Tour de France this summer, which would mark both his and the team’s first appearance at cycling’s most prestigious race.

The squad is set to make its Tour de France debut in 2026, with Guardeno having been expected to spearhead their challenge.
