KUMAR’S JOURNEY TO RAJYA SABHA

Barely four months after being sworn in for a record 10th term as Bihar Chief Minister, Kumar filed his nomination for the Rajya Sabha earlier this month, setting off intense political activity in Patna and fuelling speculation over who could succeed him in the top post. He was accompanied by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary and other National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidates.

On March 16, when Bihar went for the Rajya Sabha polls in the state assembly, Kumar received votes from 44 MLAs, securing his spot in the Upper House of the Indian Parliament. After his election, speculation arose that Kumar would soon submit his resignation as a member of the Bihar legislature as well as the sitting Chief Minister of Bihar.

SON NISHANT’S ENTRY INTO POLITICS

Bihar witnessed a new political development as Kumar’s 50-year-old son, Nishant, who had been outside of politics for a long time, officially marked his entry, days after Kumar decided to contest for the Rajya Sabha.

On March 8, Kumar formally joined the JD(U) at the party’s national headquarters in Patna. He took the JD(U) flag from the party’s National President, Sanjay Jha, in the presence of several other JD(U) leaders like Central Minister Lalan Singh and Vijay Chaudhary.

“I will try to take care of the party as an active party member,” Kumar said right after joining. He also referred to Nitish Kumar’s decision to file the nomination for the Rajya Sabha and said that he respects his father’s decision.

DEPUTY CHIEF MINISTER BUZZ

Meanwhile, a major buzz emerged in Bihar’s political circles that Nishant Kumar might take charge of the state administration as the next Deputy Chief Minister. It was also said that with Nitish going to the Rajya Sabha, there are speculations that JD(U) might witness a change in leadership also in the upcoming time.

Speaking to India Today, veteran JD(U) leader and the 10-time MLA from Bihar’s Harnaut assembly constituency, Hari Narayan Singh, said that a meeting was held among the party’s top brass, where the possibilities of Nishant becoming the Deputy Chief Minister were discussed. The meeting was spearheaded by Nitiish Kumar, and several senior leaders from the state agreed on the proposal.
