How Girija Kumari Madhu Changed the Lives of 250 Children With Cerebral Palsy in Kerala With Football

In the village of Thamarakulam in Kerala, a woman named Girija Kumari Madhu laid the foundation for a change. Born into a humble farming family, she had grown accustomed to the pulse of toil and sacrifice.

School ended for her in Class 12, and she took up nursing, later running a tailoring business to support her family. However, amidst these responsibilities, a stealthy passion for sport lingered in her heart, waiting for the right moment to awaken.

That moment arrived when she encountered children living with cerebral palsy. She saw not their limitations, but their immense potential. While others might have looked away, she was compelled to act.

The plight of these children, often relegated to the margins of society, stirred something lasting in her. She dreamt of a space where they could move beyond survival to embrace their full potential.

The strength behind every victory

In 2021, she established the ‘Cerebral Palsy Sports Association of Kerala’. From the first kick of the ball on a dusty village field, something notable began to unfold. Children who had never played football found courage, friendships, and felt the thrill of the game for the first time.

Each session was carefully shaped, designed not only to teach the sport but to inspire confidence, resilience, and faith in their own abilities.

Resources, however, were scarce. With little support from authorities and families constrained by economic hardship, Girija made a personal sacrifice. She pledged her own gold jewellery and managed to gather Rs 2 lakh to fund travel, equipment, and training. It was an act born not of necessity alone, but of faith in her young athletes.

Her belief was justified. Against all odds, her team triumphed in five national competitions, culminating in their victories at the Khelo India Para Games in 2023. Their success changed the perceptions of an entire community. Where disability had once invited pity, it now inspired pride and admiration. Parents who had once been hesitant became ardent advocates, cheering for their children with unbridled joy.

A legacy of possibility

Girija’s journey is far more than a chronicle of sporting achievement. In just a few short years, the seeds she sowed on a dusty village ground have borne exceptional fruit. Since 2021, she has trained around 250 children with cerebral palsy, guiding them not only in football but in self‑belief and social confidence.

In her unassuming and determined way, she has redefined what it means to champion the potential of others, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of all she has touched.

She reminds us that true heroism seldom lies in grand gestures but in the belief that ordinary people, when guided by compassion and tenacity, can bring about extraordinary change. In Thamarakulam, football has become a language of hope and a pulse of resilience.
