Golden momentum: Baff and Woods light up Milano Cortina

The celebrations began with Cooper Woods, who claimed gold in the Men’s Freestyle Skiing Moguls in dramatic fashion. Woods and Canadian rival Mikaël Kingsbury finished locked on exactly 83.71, with the Australian awarded gold on a superior turns score.

Woods’ triumph was followed by Josie Baff, who created history in the Women’s Snowboard Cross, becoming the first Australian woman ever to medal in the event at an Olympic Games. Baff battled illness earlier in the week before producing her gold-medal run.

In a twist befitting a Winter Games script, Baff and Woods share what has been dubbed the “Jindabyne connection” — the pair were former classmates at school in Jindabyne. Baff said Woods’ victory was the “spark” that inspired her own performance.

With two gold medals secured, attention now shifts to a massive Day 8 schedule.

Moguls redemption as Dual Moguls makes Olympic debut

Saturday night brings a slice of history with the Olympic debut of the Women’s Dual Moguls Finals at 8.30pm AEDT.

Unlike traditional moguls, the new format sees athletes race head-to-head, increasing the unpredictability and intensity of the contest.

Australia will be represented by Jakara Anthony, Charlotte Wilson and Emma Bosco.

For Anthony, the event offers a shot at redemption after finishing eighth in the standard Moguls following a mistake while leading. The defending 2022 Olympic champion remains the World No. 1 and will be looking to make her mark in the new discipline.

Alpine and cross-country challenges

Earlier on Saturday, Harry Laidlaw takes to the slopes in the Men’s Giant Slalom – Run 1 at 8.00pm AEDT, returning for the Run 2 Final at 11.30pm AEDT.

Laidlaw arrives in strong form after claiming two FIS victories in the United States in the lead-up to the Games.

In Cross-Country Skiing, the Australian quartet of Ellen Soehol Lie, Phoebe Cridland, Rosie Fordham and Maddie Hooker compete in the Women’s 4 x 7.5km Relay at 10.00pm AEDT.

Fordham recently recorded the second-best individual result in Australian cross-country history with a 33rd-place finish in the 10km Individual, while the team collectively enters the relay following a series of personal and national best performances.

Precision under pressure: Biathlon and short track

Overnight into Sunday, Darcie Morton competes in the Women’s 7.5km Sprint in Biathlon at 12.45am AEDT.

Morton qualified for Milano Cortina by a margin of just 0.7 points and is the seventh Australian biathlete to compete at an Olympic Games.

On the ice, Brendan Corey lines up in the Men’s 1500m Quarterfinals in Short Track Speed Skating at 6.15am AEDT.

Corey, who previously exited in the 1000m heats, shifts focus to the 1500m — a distance where he sits inside the world’s top 12 rankings.
