Melbourne City 5-2 Brisbane Roar

Melbourne City came from two goals down to defeat a fast starting Brisbane Roar 5-2 at ctrl:cyber Pitch and return to the top of the Ninja A-League.

Brisbane Roar started very brightly with Kijah Stephenson scoring the first two goals of the match, before Melbourne City fought back to parity at the half time break and then dominated the second half.

Malena Mieres gifted Brisbane Roar their first goal in the eighth minute , the Spanish keeper failed to claim a cross and then failed to clear the ball, leaving Aimee Medwin to lay off a pass for Stephenson to finish into an open goal from the top of the box.

Mieres made another clanger five minutes later when she misplaced a pass up the middle of the pitch, Momo Hayashi pounced on the opportunity to slide Stephenson through on goal to score her and the Roar’s second goal for the afternoon.

City had a golden chance to get one back on the half hour mark, first Roar keeper Chloe Lincoln made herself big to deny Bryleeh Henry, before Holly McNamara sprayed the rebound over the bar.

City’s goal did come in the 36th minute, again Lincoln made the first save but this time Rebekah Stott was there to put away the rebound.

McNamara brought City level before half time with her 12th goal of the season, the Matildas striker dragged the ball around Lincoln and cooly finishing into the bottom corner.

Melbourne City took the lead of the match just moments into the second half when Henry scored her first goal of the season, cutting back onto her left boot and beating Lincoln for power at the near post.

City’s fourth goal came from a rebound as well, this time Lincoln denied Aideen Keane but Football Fern Deven Jackson was arriving at the top of the box to pick up the scraps and score her first City goal.

Keane got a goal of her own to make it five, turning on to her right boot and shooting from the edge of the area to beat a diving Lincoln at the far post.

Next match for Brisbane will be Sydney FC at home on Friday night, while Melbourne City get to prepare for a Melbourne Derby on Sunday.
