Alarm bells should be ringing for Melbourne City

Former Melbourne City goalkeeper and Denmark great Thomas Sorensen believes his former club could be set for an alarming form slump if they don’t address one key issue.

City were left licking their wounds after Saturday night’s 6-2 humbling at the hands of Macarthur Bulls.

On an evening where the only real positive for City was the goalscoring debut of Australian youth international Marcus Younis, head coach Aurelio Vidmar lamented his side’s performance when speaking at his post-match press conference.

Now sat eighth on the ladder, former City keeper and 101-time Danish international Sorensen believes there is one glaringly obvious issue the reigning Champions must address, otherwise their slide down the table could be a rapid one.

“At the moment we’ll see where they go from here, but I see a mentality issue,” said Sorensen when speaking on this week’s episode of the A-Leagues Download.

“You know, the last two games, they’ve started really poorly. They haven’t been at the races.

“Looking at the team at the weekend, the front six had an average age of 20.5 and it sometimes shows.

“It’s great with all these young players, but the consistency, you know, the (lack of) knowledge, it can sometimes hinder you.

“I think they need Andreas Kuen back, you know, (Daniel) Arzani can hopefully get into shape and get into form and then you got some other players like (Takeshi) Kanamori, they haven’t quite been the players that they expected.

He continued: “So then you rely on young players, and that is sometimes a bit of a hindrance.

“I definitely would be worried. As a City fan I am. They’re not creating a lot of chances. They’re getting bullied a little bit.

“And you know what? In this league when it’s so tight, you know then you’ll drop quite quickly.”

Next up for Vidmar’s side is an away clash against Wellington Phoenix on Friday night in a game that sees the home side reach 500 Isuzu UTE A-League matches.
