That belief has shaped our journalism since the beginning, even when it meant making choices that ran against mainstream media norms.
Today, we’re taking that commitment one step further.
We’re launching Inside The Haitian Times, a new blog that offers a closer look at how our newsroom works — not just what we publish, but how and why we make the editorial decisions we do. This space is for our fellow journalists and media peers—and, most importantly, our most loyal readers —who care about accountability, representation, and the craft of telling Haitian stories well.
Inside The Haitian Times is where we’ll share not just the thinking behind editorial choices, but also the people, processes, and design decisions that shape how our journalism lives in the world. From language choice to spelling standards to product updates, this blog is your window into how and why we tell the stories that matter to the Haitian community — and how we deliver them to you.
We’re opening the blog with a post that may seem small, but carries real cultural weight: how we spell certain Haitian words.
In mainstream media, words like Vodou and konpa are often misspelled or misrepresented — reinforcing harmful stereotypes or diluting cultural significance. In the Haitian Times, language is historical, political and tied to identity.
