District Congress Committee (DCC) president Syed Khalid Saifullah on Tuesday alleged that the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre is attempting to dismantle the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).
Addressing a protest gathering near Babu Ghat in the city, Mr. Saifullah said that the Centre’s move to rename and restructure the scheme was a direct assault on the constitutional right to employment. He accused the Union government of trying to weaken one of the strongest pillars of rural welfare.
The protest was part of the nationwide MGNREGA Bachao Sangram campaign launched by the Congress. Senior leader and former MP (Rajya Sabha) V. Hanumantha Rao, Khairatabad DCC chief Motha Rohit, along with other party workers and activists, participated in the demonstration.
