OpenAI has confirmed that advertisements are coming to ChatGPT, marking a major shift in how the popular AI chatbot operates. The company announced on Friday, January 15, that it has begun testing ads within the ChatGPT app for a limited number of users in the United States.
The ads will appear for users on the free version of ChatGPT and the ChatGPT Go plan, which costs $8 per month. Users subscribed to Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise plans will not see any advertisements. According to OpenAI, the move is part of a broader effort to diversify revenue while continuing to invest heavily in artificial intelligence infrastructure.
In a blog post, OpenAI explained that ads will be shown at the bottom of ChatGPT responses and will be clearly labeled and visually separated from the AI’s organic answers. The company stressed that advertisements will not influence how ChatGPT responds to user prompts and that user conversations will not be shared with advertisers.
OpenAI also said ads will be excluded from sensitive topics such as health, politics and other high-risk areas. Users will have the option to dismiss ads and provide feedback, which OpenAI plans to use to improve the experience over time.
The decision comes as OpenAI faces growing financial pressure. Despite being valued at around $500 billion, the company has said it does not expect to become profitable before 2030. OpenAI is making massive investments in data centres, computing power and AI research, with long-term spending plans reportedly reaching as high as $1.4 trillion.
Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s CEO of Applications, reassured users that trust and quality remain central to the platform. “It’s crucial we preserve what makes ChatGPT valuable in the first place,” she wrote, emphasising that ads will not compromise the integrity of responses.
OpenAI said the ad rollout is still in an early testing phase and will be refined based on user feedback. If successful, the move could signal a new business model for AI platforms, balancing free access with commercial sustainability.
