Adelaide United 2-1 Melbourne Victory

Adelaide United 2-1 Melbourne Victory

Adelaide United made the most of their limited chances as they claimed their first win against Melbourne Victory in over three years at Coopers Stadium.

The first half hour presented plenty of half-chances for both sides with Victory getting off six shots on target, however those shots were all tame enough for Adelaide goalkeeper Ilona Melegh to claim comfortably.

Adelaide were able to get themselves something to show for a dominant 10 minutes of play when Fiona Worts cut in from the right side, wrong-footing defender Kayla Morrison and finishing into the top corner with her left foot.

Victory equalised just before half time when Alana Jančevski’s long ball over the top of the defence sent Kennedy White in on goal. Melegh parried White’s first effort away, but White was able to finish off the rebound.

Adelaide retook the lead when ex-Victory midfielder Paige Zois swung her corner kick into the inside of the far post for a spectacular olimpico goal.

The afternoon took a sour turn at the start of stoppage time, Rhianna Pollicina left on the ground in excruciating pain after landing on top of her wrist.

Victory spent the rest of the half pushing desperately for an equaliser, but Melech, Ella Tonkin and even the crossbar blocked everything Melbourne could throw at the Adelaide defence.

The win brings Adelaide United into eighth spot on the table, just two points behind Melbourne Victory in fourth.
