Prison can take someone’s freedom, but it can’t deprive an artist of their musical expression. In 1995, Tupac Shakur’s magnum opus, Me Against the World, famously hit shelves while the rapper was serving 18 months in prison. Despite the lack of promotion from ‘Pac, the album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, where it stayed for four consecutive weeks. The album, which was released in March, reached double-platinum status before the end of the year and is seen by many critics as the late rap icon’s best work.
In 2016, the hip-hop community rejoiced when Gucci Mane was released several months early from an Indiana prison. Despite being confined to a jail cell, Guwop continued to flood the streets with music throughout his nearly three-year stay. During his sentence, the Atlanta rapper dropped more than 20 projects and delivered a myriad of loosies and guest features. Speaking of Gucci Mane, his 1017 Global Music artist Pooh Shiesty is another rapper whose legal issues and time behind bars have robbed him of capitalizing off his huge buzz at times. On April 2, 2026, six months after he had served over three years of a 63-month sentence in federal prison, Pooh was arrested on robbery and kidnapping charges. Federal prosecutors alleged that Pooh, along with his father, Lontrell Williams, Sr., fellow rapper Big30 and six other men were involved in allegedly robbing and kidnapping multiple people—one of whom is believed to be Gucci Mane— at gunpoint at a recording studio in Dallas, TX, on Jan. 10, 2026. While in jail waiting for his trial on robbery and kidnapping charges, the Memphis rhymer dropped All Eyes on Shiest, which debuted in the top 10 of the Billboard 200 chart with 51,000 equivalent album units moved in its first week of release.
Overall, several more rappers have kept their names alive from behind bars by releasing projects from the inside.
