A car crashed into a busy Newburyport restaurant on Thursday, injuring multiple people, public safety officials said.

A black 2024 BMW X3 crashed into the floor-to-ceiling window of the Black Cow restaurant shortly after 6 p.m., Newburyport City Marshal Matthew Simons and Fire Chief Stephen Bradbury said in a joint press release.

The driver, a 67-year-old woman from Groveland, was uninjured and cooperated with police, first responders said.

“Alcohol is not suspected to be a factor in the crash, however the crash remains under investigation by the Newburyport Police Department,” Simons and Bradbury said.

Inside the restaurant, three customers were injured and were evaluated by first responders, officials said.

Two men were transported to Anna Jaques Hospital. The third person did not want to go to a hospital, Simons and Bradbury said.

“None of the injuries are immediately believed to be life-threatening,” officials said.

An inspector with the Newburyport Building Department determined that no structural damage was done to the building, but the bar area will need to undergo repairs, Simons and Bradbury said.

The restaurant is still open, but with the impacted section closed, the officials said.
