20 Bollywood songs that sound even better when it’s raining outside

Music and monsoon have always shared a very symbiotic relationship. Rain not only serves as the perfect lyrical metaphor for emotions ranging from love and hope to heartbreak and new beginnings, it also heightens the experience of listening itself. Every time it rains, my favourite thing to do is rush off to the terrace with a cup of coffee, plug in my earphones and spend the next hour or two immersed in my playlist without a care in the world.

I don’t think any season lends itself to being romanticised quite like the monsoon. Every kind of weather comes with its own rituals, but few compare to the pleasure of sitting through a downpour from the comfort of the indoors. The world is suddenly infused with an atmospheric buzz that grazes against us, making its presence felt. I am suddenly the main character in a music video, and the song I choose is extremely significant. While Bollywood songs like ‘Barso Re’ and ‘Tip Tip Barsa Pani’ have earned their place as certified monsoon bangers, there are subtler tunes that make a rainy afternoon infinitely more memorable.

For your listening pleasure, we have curated a few of them below.

‘Rehna Tu’ (Delhi-6, 2009)
