10 News Sports Editor NINA STEVENS departs newsroom

Another experienced face has departed the 10 News newsroom, with Sports Editor Nina Stevens confirming the end of her latest chapter at the network.

In a candid LinkedIn post on Thursday, Stevens revealed she had been made redundant this month, reflecting on a journalism career spanning 35 years across some of Australia’s biggest news organisations.

Stevens said she had been “tapped on the shoulder” after three and a half decades in journalism, describing an industry she has watched grow, shrink and evolve before changing “at lightning speed” in recent years.

Beginning her career as a newspaper cadet in Adelaide, Stevens landed her first television role at 10 Adelaide in 1992 before going on to work in the newsrooms of Nine, Seven and Sky News.

After relocating to Sydney ahead of the 2000 Olympics to join Nine’s coverage and later spending two stints in NSW politics, she returned to Network 10 in 2022 as Sports Editor, overseeing coverage of the Paris Olympics, FIFA Women’s World Cup, NRL and AFL.

Reflecting on the changing media landscape, Stevens said “15 second bites and AI” are reshaping the way audiences consume news, but she believes some fundamentals remain unchanged.

“Journalism matters. But the industry is different now.”

She added:

“Nothing beats a real conversation, where we listen, learn, lament and hopefully sometimes laugh. That’s the power of communication.”

Stevens’ departure comes as Australia’s media industry continues to undergo significant change, with broadcasters and publishers alike reducing costs amid ongoing economic pressures.

Earlier this month, Southern Cross Media, the parent company of Seven following its merger with Seven West Media, announced a group-wide cost reduction program expected to result in between 250 and 300 roles being cut across its television, radio and publishing businesses.

TV Blackbox understands Stevens’ redundancy was an isolated decision and not part of any broader newsroom or business restructuring at Network 10.
