10 new art shows in India we’re excited about this November

While those familiar with the Indian art landscape could no doubt name more than a few of their favourite artists, we often forget the contribution of South Indian artists to our cultural legacy. This show nudges viewers to delve deeper into the lower half of India, presenting 47 works by 16 contemporary artists from Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala. Ranging from realist portraiture to abstraction, from canvas and paper to clay, copper and natural-dyed fabric, the show covers themes of village life, memory, mythology and South Asian visual heritage as a whole. Curated by artist and educator S Vijayaraghavan, the exhibition not only features more diverse voices in the Indian art scene, but also explores new ways of simultaneously representing a region and its people.

Featuring works by Seema Kohli, Kanika Gupta, She Kantha, Anirban Das, Samik De and Manmita Ray, the show delves into themes of inherited traditions, ritual and devotional practices, and visual representations of the sacred and the divine through images and sculpture.
