Young Swiss couple identified after bull shark mauling in NSW

The Swiss couple involved in a horrific shark attack on Thursday have been identified.

Lukas Schindler, 26, and girlfriend Livia Mulheim, 25, are understood to have been filming a pod of dolphins at Kylies Beach in Crowdy Bay National Park, on the NSW mid-north coast, when they were mauled by a 3m bull shark.

Mulheim was attacked first before her partner suffered serious leg injuries trying to save her.

Schindler dragged his girlfriend 50m back to shore and bystanders raced to help. Sadly, she could not be saved.

Schindler, who has been hailed a hero, was flown by helicopter to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle, where he remains in a stable condition.

Floral tributes were placed at the beach on Friday.

The couple are believed to have travelled extensively while on their Australian stay, while Schindler took part in August’s Sydney marathon and had completed a course to become a diving instructor while Down Under.

The Swiss government’s foreign affairs department is providing support for their families.
