Lineth Beerensteyn grabbed the only goal as VfL Wolfsburg claimed a 1-0 win over OL Lyonnes in the first leg of their Women’s Champions League quarterfinal.
The French side were 3-1 victors on home soil when the same teams met in the group stage in November, but Stephan Lerch’s team gained a slender advantage heading into next month’s return fixture.

The decisive moment came just before the quarter-hour mark, Beerensteyn doing well to get a Vivien Endemann pass under control and then benefitting from a helpful deflection as she beat Christiane Endler in the away goal.
That was Beerensteyn’s fifth of the campaign, a tally bettered only by Arsenal’s Alessia Russo, and she threatened again when her header climbed over the crossbar.

Lyonnes had enjoyed plenty of possession but lacked cutting edge as they went in behind at the break. They came close to putting that right on the hour, Kadidiatou Diani’s drive coming back off the base of a post.
There was another big chance just before full-time but Marie-Antoinette Katoto missed the target with a glanced header from Selma Bacha’s cross.
