India’s major airlines, Air India and IndiGo, on Saturday announced the suspension of all their flights to destinations across the Middle East in view of the rapidly developing security situation in the region, after escalating armed hostilities between the United States, Israel and Iran triggered widespread airspace closures.
IndiGo said that in view of evolving airspace restrictions around Iran and the Middle East, all flights to and from the Middle East have been cancelled till 0000 hours.
SpiceJet also issued a statement saying, “Due to airspace closure in Dubai, some of our flights may be affected.”
The announcement came from both airlines hours after an Air India flight en route from India to Tel Aviv was forced to turn back mid-journey following the closure of regional airspace.
A full-scale military conflict is underway in the Middle East, with the US and Israel targeting Iran and Iranian forces retaliating against Israel as well as striking US bases across the Gulf region.Click here to follow live coverage of US-Israel attack on Iran
Earlier today, the United States and Israel launched coordinated strikes in Tehran and other parts of Iran, targeting key government offices and military installations. One of the primary targets was reportedly linked to the office of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who is said to have been moved to a secure location. The extent of the damage and any casualties remain unclear. Meanwhile, Iran has reportedly launched retaliatory missile strikes.
Amid the volatile situation, Delhi Airport issued an advisory stating that international flights to the West may experience disruptions.
Several airlines around the world have cancelled or suspended services to Israel and Iran amid escalating tensions in the region. The disruptions have not only affected flights to these countries but have also impacted routes to other parts of the world that use their or nearby airspace.
Qatar announced that it has temporarily halted all air traffic as a precautionary measure.
German airline Lufthansa said it is suspending flights to and from Tel Aviv, Beirut and Amman until March 7. Oman Air announced that it has temporarily suspended flights to Baghdad due to the evolving situation in the region.
A flydubai spokesperson said some of its flights have been impacted following the temporary closure of Iraqi, Iranian and Israeli airspace on Saturday.
Russia’s Transport Ministry said Russian air carriers have also suspended flights to Israel and Iran. Air France has also cancelled flights to and from Tel Aviv in Israel and Beirut in Lebanon that were slated for February 28.
Meanwhile, Iraq’s Erbil Airport announced the suspension of all air traffic, according to the Iraqi state news agency.
