Of all of my favorite Eagles players in the Nick Sirianni Era — CJ Gardner-Johnson will always be at the top of my list. It’s not just that he is one of the latest in a long line of great Eagles safety’s like Andre Waters and Brian Dawkins. It’s not because both of his tenure’s in Philadelphia ended with Super Bowl appearances.
Rather — it’s the unapologetic way that he plays the game. Giving his all on every play on the field — whether filling a gap against Bijan Robinson at the Linc running towards the sidelines without a helmet or pulverizing Isaiah Pacheco in the Super Bowl — he was a freight train presence with the Eagles in both his unapologetic play coupled with his fiery demeanor.
He’s a talent that you want on your team — and do not want to play against.
This week — social media is alive once again with interviews and sounds bites around what could be wrong with the Eagles — with experts and former players alike weighing in on what is amiss with the World Champs. Less than 24 hours after the Bears beat the Eagles in Philadelphia 24–15 — CJ Gardner-Johnson joined LeSean McCoy and Emmanuel Acho on their podcast “Speakeasy.”
On the Eagles last possession on Friday on 3rd and 4 — CJ Gardner-Johnson popped Jalen Hurts after a short run. When the Eagles obtained CJ Gardner-Johnson in both 2022 and 2024 — they went to the Super Bowl the following season in both seasons. When the Eagles decided to turn to youth in the secondary after a Super Bowl win — Gardner-Johnson was out first to Houston and then to Baltimore and finally to Chicago.
Back in the interview — Gardner-Johnson spoke with a true respect for his former Eagle teammates. When McCoy and Acho asked him if he thought that the Eagles offense was too predictable — CGJ had a simple answer.
He just gave a wink.
