Australians travelling to the United Kingdom are being warned they could be barred from flights if they forget one simple thing.
The Government is urging Aussies to check that they meet the UK’s updated mandatory travel requirements coming into force on February 25.
Visitors to the UK must have an Electronic Travel Authorisation or a visa for short stays of no more than six months long.

“From 25 February 2026 eligible visitors without an ETA will not be able to board their transport and cannot legally travel to the UK,” the UK government said.
ETAs cost $20 and the application process is simple, with most people getting an automatic decision within minutes if they apply through the UK ETA app. Travellers can also apply through the UK government’s website.
“It is recommended that people apply for an ETA at least three working days in advance of travel, this is to take account of the small number of cases which may need further review,” the UK government advised.
The application process involves payment of the fee, providing contact and passport details, providing a valid photo and answering a set of “suitability and criminality” questions.
The rules also affect those taking connecting flights through the UK.
“Eligible visitors who take connecting flights (transiting) and go through UK passport control need an ETA,” the UK government said.
“Those transiting through Heathrow and Manchester airports who do not go through UK passport control do not currently need an ETA.”
In a Smartraveller update posted on February 10, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade reiterated the changing rules for dual citizens, who will be unable to travel to the UK using an ETA from February 25.
Instead, they must either have a valid British passport or a certificate of entitlement attached to their Australian passport – both of which are costly.
The only other option it to renounce citizenship which is also costly.
