Two minors burned to death in West Bengal after haystack catches fire

Two tribal children in West Bengal’s Purulia died on Saturday after being caught in a fire while playing. According to sources, the fire broke out suddenly in a haystack dumped behind a house, and the children, who were playing near it, were burned to death.

A woman from the neighbouring house saw the blaze first and informed the local villagers, and they soon rushed to the spot. After bringing the flames under control, the locals recovered the charred bodies trapped beneath the haystack and called the police.

Upon receiving the information, the police soon reached the location and sent the bodies to the nearby health centre, where, after examination, the two children, identified as Saleman Hembram (3.5 years old) and Akash Besra (3 years old), were declared dead. Their bodies were further sent to Purulia Government Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem. The police said that the post-mortem will be conducted on Sunday.

They have further registered a case of an unnatural death and are probing why the fire broke out in the haystack. The reason is unknown yet.

Following the incident, Bharat Hembram, a resident, said, “We got to know about the blaze and ran to the spot to bring the flame under control. As we did that, we found two children trapped beneath. We recovered them, but they were dead.”
