Tottenham thrash Slavia Prague but Micky van de Ven moment overshadows big win

Tottenham cruised to a vital Champions League triumph on Tuesday evening, dispatching Slavia Prague 3-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The north Londoners got themselves ahead in the 26th minute when Cristian Romero flicked on a Pedro Porro corner, only for Slavia defender David Zima to head the ball past his own goalkeeper Jindrich Stanek.

Mohammed Kudus doubled the advantage from the penalty spot early in the second half after Youssoupha Sanyang brought down Porro in the box.

Xavi Simons then wrapped things up with another spot-kick in the 79th minute, converting coolly after Igoh Ogbu had fouled him.

This result lifts Spurs into the top eight of the Champions League standings, putting them in a strong position to secure automatic qualification for the knockout rounds.

It’s the first time Thomas Frank’s side have strung together consecutive victories since late September, building nicely on their Premier League win against Brentford at the weekend.

The Dane had been feeling the heat after just one win in six matches across all competitions, so this performance will come as welcome relief.

Spurs have now won all three of their home Champions League fixtures this season without conceding a single goal.

Son Heung-min was in attendance for this special evening, watching from the stands like a proud father as his former teammates put on quite a show.

The beloved skipper, who lifted the Europa League trophy during his time at the club, was back in N17 for the first time since his emotional £20million summer transfer to LAFC.

You could tell he wished he was out there on the pitch as Spurs tore through the Czech champions with such conviction.

It was a fitting homecoming for a player who gave everything to the club during his years in north London.

The evening wasn’t without its frustrations, though, as Micky van de Ven picked up a costly yellow card that will rule him out of the crucial Borussia Dortmund clash on January 20.

The Dutch defender was booked after an incident with striker Mojmir Chytil, who went down clutching his face after Van de Ven had shrugged him off while charging up the pitch.

It’s a real blow for Frank’s side, who must beat both Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt if they want to bypass the knockout play-off round.

Spurs now turn their attention to Sunday’s Premier League trip to Nottingham Forest.
