The National Highways & Motorway Police (NHMP) has announced the closure of multiple motorway sections for traffic after dense fog reduced visibility to dangerous levels, disrupting major intercity routes across Punjab and Sindh.
Under the current situation, traffic has been suspended on the following stretches:
- M-1: Peshawar to Swabi
- M-2: Islamabad to Lahore
- M-3: Faizpur to Jaranwala
- M-4: Gojra to Faisalabad
- M-5: Rohri to Rahim Yar Khan
- M-11: Lahore to Sambrial
Fog is a recurring winter hazard in the region, at times cutting visibility below 50 metres and significantly increasing the risk of collisions. Official weather-linked assessments indicate road fatalities can rise by up to 30% during severe fog spells, making temporary closures a key safety step when conditions deteriorate.
The NHMP’s announcement was issued on January 12, 2026, as part of ongoing fog-related disruptions that have affected 500+ kilometres of highways since early January. Commuters and freight traffic are expected to face delays until visibility improves, typically after sunrise, though fog intensity can vary sharply across districts.
Reports on January 13 morning suggested partial improvement on sections of M-2. Motorists have been urged to postpone non-essential travel during peak fog hours and to plan journeys for daylight when visibility is generally better.
