The Newsreader again headlines ABC’s big night at the 2026 AACTA Awards

The ABC has wrapped up a huge night at the AACTAs, topping the free to air field with a broad sweep of wins that spanned drama, comedy, entertainment and beyond.

With 11 awards in total, the network emerged as the leading free-to-air broadcaster at last night’s ceremony on the Gold Coast, led by another dominant showing from The Newsreader.

Led by Anna Torv and Sam Reid, the third and final season of The Newsreader took out Best Drama Series, completing a rare trifecta after earlier wins for its first two seasons.

The acclaimed drama also claimed Best Screenplay in Television for Michael Lucas, Best Lead Actress for Anna Torv, and Best Supporting Actor in a Drama for Daniel Henshall, bringing its total tally to 14 AACTA Awards across three seasons.

ABC Director of Screen Jennifer Collins praised the breadth of the results, highlighting the strength of the network’s local slate and creative partnerships.

“Congratulations to the ABC Screen teams whose exceptional work across our diverse and ambitious slate ensures these remarkable programs reach audiences around the country, and to our production partners whose craft and creativity make it possible to deliver these unmistakably Australian programs.”

Comedy favourite Hard Quiz also featured prominently, winning Best Comedy Entertainment Program, while host Tom Gleeson was named Best Comedy Performer.

Entertainment success extended further with Portrait Artist of the Year taking out Best Entertainment Program in its first Australian season, hosted by Miranda Tapsell and Luke McGregor which returns in 2026.

Children’s television and lifestyle programming were also recognised, with Play School: All Together winning Best Children’s Program and Grand Designs Australia named Best Lifestyle Program.

Celia Pacquola secured Best Stand Up Special for I’m As Surprised As You Are, while The Kimberley was honoured with Best Cinematography in a Documentary.
