Baki-Dou: The Invincible Samurai is based on the Baki-Dou manga, the fourth chapter of Keisuke Itagaki‘s Baki martial arts saga. Netflix’s synopsis reads:

Following the conclusion of the greatest father-son fight on earth, Baki and other legendary fighters are overcome with unbearable boredom. Meanwhile, 364 meters beneath Tokyo Skytree, a secret plan is set into motion that seeks to revive the master swordsman Miyamoto Musashi… Unleashed in the present day, this menacing new threat wields his swordsmanship with unparalleled power and speed to attack Baki and the others. It’s the strongest underground arena fighters vs. the legendary swordsman! What will be the outcome of this mixed martial arts battle that crosses time and space? The history of strength is about to change!

The Baki franchise began in 1991 with Baki the Grappler. The sixth main entry, Baki Rahen, started in 2023. Baki-Dou ran from 2014 to 2018 in Akita Shoten’s Weekly Shonen Champion and is collected into 22 volumes.

The manga previously inspired a 1994 OVA and a 2001 TV series before the start of a new anime, which adapts the second main Baki entry, in 2018. The show was followed by a 2020 second season, 2021’s Baki Hanma, and 2023’s Baki Hanma Season 2. There was also a Baki Hanma VS Kengan Ashura crossover anime.
