The bakery behind Australia’s best sausage roll, Banana Boogie, is opening at the Adelaide Central Market

Banana Boogie is grooving its way into the CBD, with a new venue on the horizon at the Adelaide Central Markets. The additional space comes as the market is set to double in size with a $400 million expansion, bringing ten new vendors into the mix.

With two well established SA locations, in Belair and North Plympton, Banana Boogie has been delighting patrons for years with its mouth-watering array of baked goods and signature treats. Their famous vanilla slice and sausage roll recipes often sell out quicker then you can say “sweet treat,” especially on a Saturday.

For owner Jason Spencer, who runs the show with partner Kelly, moving into the markets is something that while hectic, will bring a whole new demographic of customers.

“Being somewhere so central will help more people get to know who we are and hopefully that helps us expand into the future with new locations,” he said. “A lot of office workers will be able to grab something during the week instead of having to wait until Saturday to go up to Bel Air or North Plympton.”

“Everyone’s excited, all the bakers are excited, and we’re bringing some more members into the team as well.”

The stall will be offering up a feast for not only the mouth, but eyes and nose with glass windows displaying bakers decorating, baking and all that good stuff. The goal is to make the whole experience feel authentic, while bringing a few theatrics into the mix.

“People will be able to watch and interact,” he said. “Our stall is positioned with a mezzanine level above it, so people will even be able to look down and see what the bakers are doing.”

Last year their sausage roll was crowned Australia’s Greatest at the prestigious Great Aussie Pie, Pastie and Sausage Roll Competition. In 2024, the bakery won Australia’s Best Vanilla Slice at the Great Australian Vanilla Slice Triumph competition.

The menu offering will bring all the same great famous treats they’re known for while they update and try new recipes, with the goal to level up up from a bakery to a patisserie.

“We’re looking at levelling up with some more high-end patisserie products,” Jason said.

At the beginning of the year the team did some research and development, while visiting Gumnut Patisserie in the Southern Highlands near Sydney.

“We learned a lot from them and got some tips and recipes on how to take things from bakery level to patisserie level,” he said. “Hopefully we’ll have some really high-end products at the markets.”

Keep your eye out for that notable yellow banana logo, swirling around their stall space and potentially more spots around Adelaide in the years to come.
