Melbourne Victory left it late to get the goal, but the 1-0 derby win is the sort of result that can fill a team with confidence.
After 90 minutes, it looked as though a tense encounter would end 0-0. But then up stepped substitute Matthew Grimaldi, who found himself the time and space to shoot from range and place it inside City keeper Patrick Beach’s near post.
Wellington had a less stressful route to victory, with a 3-1 win at home to Central Coast. Corban Piper contributed a goal and an assist for Carlo Armiento, while Manjrekar James converted from the penalty spot.
Wellington will be forced to start young Eamonn McCarron in goal. McCarron made his Isuzu UTE A-League debut against Central Coast, replacing the injured Joshua Oluwayemi after just 10 minutes.

Round 9 result
Central Coast Mariners: 3-1 loss to Wellington Phoenix (A)
Brisbane Roar: 2-1 loss to Macarthur (A)
Central Coast struggled in their loss away to Wellington. Their only goal coming from Sabit Ngor getting himself in position to tap home a spill from the Phoenix keeper.
Brisbane Roar were frustrated at Macarthur, scoring early in the second half through Matthew Dench, before conceding two goals to penalties to lose 2-1.
Despite this lapse, Brisbane remain the top defensive team in the league, having conceded just the five goals from nine matches.
A sixth straight match without a win for Central Coast would keep them planted at the foot of the table. While a win for Brisbane could move them into second.
