Welcome back to Scenic Six.
It’s always nice when you can escape the cold weather for a bit and this week I’m in sunny Georgia. My 83-year-old dad asked if I’d accompany him on a flight south to visit his sister. The trip was made even sweeter when we scored $64 JetBlue flights out of Boston via the airline’s recent winter sale, which I wrote about a few weeks ago.
This week, I’m taking you inside a recently renovated getaway on Lake Winnipesaukee and sharing details about new flights between Boston and Canada, the Vermont Maple Festival, and a discounted girlfriend getaway in Maine.

The unwritten rules of the slopes
It’s been an excellent year for snow at local ski resorts, but do the manners of skiers and riders match the stellar conditions? We asked readers for the unwritten rules of the mountain and they didn’t hold back. I agree with Jimmy from Quincy about “Mr. Backpack Speaker Guy.” Not everyone enjoys music during their scenic ride to the top.
Canada may be calling
It may be time to plan a trip to Canada this year. Toronto-based Porter Airlines is beefing up service between Boston and Canada, adding two direct, high-frequency routes to Montréal and Toronto from Boston in May. The routes will connect Bostonians to two additional Canadian airports.
Travel tips:
- The Little City Thrifty Vintage Market, Rhode Island’s biggest vintage market, will take place March 7-8 at the WaterFire Arts Center in Providence. The two-day event features more than 90 vintage booths selling clothing, home decor, vinyl records, books, art, jewelry, and more.
- Maple season is coming. The 59th annual Vermont Maple Festival, is happening April 24-26 in St. Alban’s, Vermont and events will include everything from pancake breakfasts to sugarhouse tours to live shows.
Deals and steals:
- Take a free yoga class at Boston’s The Liberty Hotel during the hotel’s Equinox Wellness Saturdays. The class, taught Feb. 14 and Feb. 28 at 10 a.m., is open to hotel guests and the public. Participants not staying at the hotel are asked to bring their own mat.
- College students can save money at Crotched Mountain in Bennington, N.H. on Feb. 28 during its final Dew After Dark College Nights event of the season, when students can ski for $39 and get rentals for $22 from 5 to 9 p.m.
- Portland Harbor Hotel in Portland, Maine is currently running a Girlfriends Getaway Package for two-night stays that includes a $100 dining credit at its Harbor Bistro + Terrace per stay, complimentary valet parking for one vehicle (regularly $45 per night), a welcome cocktail for up to four guests, and complimentary bikes for exploring Portland.
I’ll leave you with this photo taken from Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California by Boston.com sports writer Conor Ryan who was covering the Super Bowl. Sadly, the Pats lost. But you can’t beat that view.
