The International Cricket Council (ICC) has issued its first official response after Pakistan confirmed it will boycott its high-profile clash against India at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. The governing body expressed strong reservations about the decision, calling it inconsistent with the core principles of global sporting competitions and urging the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to seek a mutually acceptable solution.
Pakistan confirms boycott of India fixture at T20 World Cup 2026
After several days of uncertainty and intense speculation, the PCB announced on Sunday that Pakistan will not take the field for its group-stage match against India scheduled for February 15. The decision followed consultations with the Government of Pakistan, which granted approval for the national team to participate in the tournament—except for the India encounter.
In a formal statement, the Government of Pakistan said that while it had cleared the team’s participation in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, the side would not play the match against India. The announcement immediately sent shockwaves through the cricketing world, given the scale and significance of India-Pakistan encounters at global tournaments.
Selective participation undermines the Spirit of the Game: ICC
Responding to the development, the ICC released a strongly worded statement, stressing that selective participation runs counter to the foundations on which ICC tournaments are built. While acknowledging the role of governments in national decision-making, the global body made it clear that such actions are difficult to reconcile with the integrity of international sport.
The ICC noted that all qualified teams are expected to compete on equal terms according to the tournament schedule. It warned that opting out of specific matches undermines competitiveness, consistency, and fairness-values that are central to the credibility of ICC events.
Beyond the immediate fallout, the ICC highlighted the potential long-term consequences of Pakistan’s stance. It cautioned that such decisions could negatively affect the global cricket ecosystem, of which Pakistan is an integral member and beneficiary.
The ICC also emphasized that the boycott may not serve the interests of fans worldwide, including millions of passionate supporters within Pakistan. India-Pakistan matches are among the most-watched sporting events globally, and their absence could diminish the spectacle and commercial value of the tournament.
While stopping short of announcing sanctions, the ICC urged the PCB to reflect on the broader implications and explore a resolution that safeguards the interests of all stakeholders. The governing body reiterated that its priority remains the smooth and successful conduct of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, a responsibility it believes is shared by all member boards.
The ICC stated that it expects the PCB to work towards a solution that aligns with the spirit of the competition and preserves the sanctity of the event.

Points forfeiture could hurt Pakistan’s T20 WC campaign
From a competitive standpoint, Pakistan’s decision could significantly impact its World Cup campaign. Under ICC playing conditions, Pakistan will forfeit two points from the India match, a loss that could prove costly in a tightly contested Group A.
Pakistan have been drawn alongside India, Namibia, Netherlands and United States. All of Pakistan’s group-stage matches are scheduled to be played in Sri Lanka, which is co-hosting the tournament with India.
