Sydney FC make key signing ahead of Ninja A-League finals

Sydney FC have strengthened their squad ahead of a crucial run-in to the end of the Ninja A-League season, signing young defender Claudia Valetta for the final three games of the regular campaign.

Valetta, 22, joins the Sky Blues as a free agent and arrives at an important time for the club, helping ease a growing list of injury and suspension concerns.

Sydney FC will be without a number of players, with eight currently unavailable, including Riley Tanner and Willa Pearson, who are both suspended for one match after reaching five yellow cards last Friday night.

The versatile defender has been training with the squad in recent weeks and now earns her opportunity to represent the Sky Blues in a competitive environment, starting with Friday night’s clash against Wellington Phoenix.

Valetta expressed her excitement at the opportunity to join one of Australia’s most successful clubs.

“It feels really exciting and I’m grateful for the opportunity,” she said.

“Sydney FC is a massive club with high standards, so to be part of that environment is something I’m really proud of. It’s a privilege to wear the Sydney jersey, and I’m ready to work hard and contribute to the team however I can.

“It’s a great chance to learn quickly, adapt and make the most of every minute I get. With only a few games left, it’s about staying ready, taking my opportunities when they come and doing whatever the team needs to finish the season strongly.

“I want to bring energy, a strong work rate and a positive attitude. Whether it’s on or off the ball, I’ll be looking to do my role well and support the team.

“The team has worked really hard throughout the season, so I want to add to that and help in any way I can. Against Wellington Phoenix and in the remaining games, it’s about being reliable, making an impact where I can and helping the team get results. I believe, with the blueprint James has given us, we can do it.”

Interim Head Coach James Slaveski praised Valetta’s attitude and commitment, highlighting her readiness to step into the squad.

“She deserves the opportunity,” he said.

“She’s been with the squad in a training capacity well before I came into the role.

“Since I’ve come in, she has really impressed in terms of her demeanour.

“The girls really respect her, and they’re really happy for her as well. She’s extremely hard-working and can play multiple roles, which will help us. I think she’s going to add real value to us in these last three games.”
