Speeding Audi runs amok in Jaipur, mows down people; one killed, 16 injured

Panic gripped a busy Jaipur neighbourhood late Friday night when a speeding Audi car went out of control, ploughing into pedestrians and roadside vendors, killing one person and injuring at least 16 others in a scene witnesses described as “sheer chaos.”

The crash occurred near Kharabas Circle in the Journalist Colony area of Jaipur, where the luxury vehicle first rammed into a road divider before veering sharply towards the roadside. The car then barrelled through carts and makeshift stalls for nearly 30 metres, crushing everything in its path.

“It was coming at terrifying speed. People screamed and ran for their lives,” said an eyewitness, adding that the toll could have been far higher had people not managed to scatter in time.

More than a dozen carts and kiosks were overturned in the impact. A parked car was also hit with such force that it flipped over, underlining the severity of the collision. The stretch, usually crowded late into the night, was left strewn with debris, broken carts and injured victims crying for help.

Police teams from Muhana and Journalist Colony police stations rushed to the spot and shifted all the injured to hospitals. Twelve victims are undergoing treatment at SMS Hospital and Jaipuria Hospital, while four others were discharged after first aid.

Muhana SHO Gurubhupendra Singh said preliminary findings point to reckless driving. “The Audi was being driven at a very high speed. There is a strong suspicion that the driver was under the influence of alcohol,” he said. The vehicle has been seized and a detailed investigation is underway.

The incident drew the attention of senior state officials. Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma directed Jaipur city officials and hospital authorities to ensure proper and timely treatment for the injured.

Deputy Chief Minister Prem Chand Bairwa visited the accident site and confirmed that four people were inside the Audi at the time of the crash. “One person died after being crushed by the car. One of the occupants has been taken into police custody,” he said, adding that treatment of the injured was ongoing.

Police said the accused are residents of areas near Jaipur. Further action will be taken once the investigation, including medical and forensic reports, is completed.
