Sources: Bears close in on Polish-born prop

The Perth Bears’ roster build is far from finished, and despite marquee signings in Siosifa Talakai and Scott Sorensen making waves in recent days, the NRL’s incoming franchise is continuing its search for experienced star forwards.

Sources with knowledge of the club’s recruitment discussions have indicated Polish-born Leeds Rhinos prop Mikolaj Oledzki has emerged as a forward option being strongly considered as the Bears shape their inaugural squad, ESPN understands.

Multiple figures across the player market suggested Oledzki’s name has been raised internally as part of the club’s pack planning, with Perth prioritising established middle leaders to anchor its foundation roster.

The 27-year-old remains contracted to Leeds until the end of the 2028 Super League season, meaning any potential move would require negotiations with the Rhinos should the Bears formalise interest.

Oledzki has been among Super League’s premier middle forwards in recent seasons and is a regular in England’s international rotation — the profile of forward expansion clubs have historically targeted to provide early stability.

The prop previously played down links to Perth earlier this year, stating he remained focused on Leeds, however sources indicated the Bears’ wider search for overseas middle forwards has continued as recruitment plans accelerate;, with Oledzki remaining a key target.

No agreement has been finalised as of yet, and there has been no public indication from Leeds of an intention to release Oledzki from his contract.

ESPN has contacted the Rhinos, the Bears, and Oledzki’s management for comment.
