Sound! Euphonium began in 2015 and is inspired by the Takarajimasha-published novel series by Ayano Takeda, the first volume of which Yen Press describes as such:
After a terrible disappointment at the All-Kyoto Concert Band Competition, music has lost its spark for Kumiko. But her first year at Kitauji High School is a chance for a fresh start. So when it comes time to choose a club, she can’t resist joining the band again–even though they’re simply terrible. The strict new club director has promised to whip them into shape to reach Nationals, but the trouble runs deeper than just a lack of practice. Plus, the discord within the club tugs at Kumiko’s old insecurities. Will Kitauji High School find its rhythm before the competition? Will Kumiko?
The third season saw protagonist Kumiko dealing with the challenge of leading the Kitauji High School band and the unforeseen appearance of transfer student Mayu, who happens to be a third-year euphonium player like herself.
Aside from the TV anime’s seasons, there are also theatrical versions of the first two seasons, the Liz and the Blue Bird spin-off film, 2019’s Sound! Euphonium: Chikai no Finale movie, and the 2023 theatrical OVA Sound! Euphonium: Ensemble Contest.
The Sound! Euphonium books began in 2013, with the series having seven main volumes as of 2019. A new short story anthology titled Sound! Euphonium: Kitauji Koukou Suisougakubu no Minna no Hanashi was released in 2024.
