Melbourne City have confirmed defender Kai Trewin has joined Major League Soccer (MLS) side New York City FC for an undisclosed fee.
The 24-year-old heads stateside after 18 months in Melbourne where he played a pivotal role in helping City clinch the 2025-26 Isuzu UTE A-League Championship.

An ever reliable presence for City in both defence and midfield, Trewin’s outstanding performances for Aurelio Vidmar’s side saw him crowned the club’s Player of the Year.
Furthermore, Trewin also garnered his first two caps for the Socceroos whilst under the tutelage of Vidmar at Melbourne City.

“My time in Melbourne has been really special, and being part of a Championship-winning season is something I’ll always be proud of,” said Trewin after his move to MLS was confirmed.
“I’d like to thank everyone at the Club for making me feel so welcome from day one, as well as the City fans for their incredible support over the past 18 months.

Trewin will now link up with fellow Socceroo and former Melbourne City midfielder Aiden O’Neill, who moved to the US from Belgian side Standard Liege.

“While it’s always disappointing to lose a key player at this stage of the season, a significant offer was made to both the Club and the player, which after strong consideration, we have accepted,” said Melbourne City FC Director of Football, Michael Petrillo.
“Kai has had a huge impact since arriving at the Club, both through his performances on the pitch and the professionalism he brought to our group.
“We fully support him in taking this next step in his career and wish him every success in New York.”
In total, Trewin made 47 appearances for City and scored three goals since joining from fellow Isuzu UTE A-League side Brisbane Roar.
