Snowy Sidewalks & 26.2: How to Keep Your Marathon Dreams Alive in Southie

Well, Southie, we survived the storm. But while the rest of the neighborhood is still arguing over space savers, our local marathon runners are currently wondering how the heck they’re going to get an 18-miler in when Old Colony Ave looks like the North Pole.

Running in Boston is a contact sport, especially in February. Between the “Southie Slush” and the narrow paths, training for a spring marathon right now is an Olympic feat in itself. But don’t let a foot and a half of snow derail your PR goals.

Southie Survival Tips for Runners:

  • Find the “Clear” Routes: The paths along Castle Island and Day Blvd are usually the first to be cleared, but watch out for the wind off the water – it’s no joke this week!
  • Shorten Your Stride: To avoid a “Bambi on ice” moment, keep your feet underneath your center of gravity. Shorter, quicker steps give you better control when you hit an unexpected slick spot.
  • Warm Up Inside: Don’t start your run with “cold” muscles in 20-degree weather. Do your dynamic stretching in your hallway before you head out the door.
