The Sindh Assembly was informed on Friday that the provincial government has intensified action against unfit vehicles, issuing fines of Rs. 820 million to 56,200 heavy vehicles last year.
Senior Minister Sharjeel Memon, who also oversees the transport department, provided the figures during Question Hour while responding to lawmakers’ queries. He said authorities issued challans to 2,935 dumpers, 2,138 oil tankers, 183 tractors, 13,918 trailers, 30,917 trucks, and 6,109 water tankers in the past year.
Memon explained that fitness certificates were previously issued manually without proper records, and vehicles from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan could obtain certificates in Sindh.
“The entire system has now been computerized, and no vehicle can operate on the roads without a digital fitness certificate,” he added.
The minister also said the government is in the process of acquiring additional buses, with some already at the port, and approval has been granted for 500 more buses. He noted that around 200,000 people use Sindh government buses daily, while ridership on the Green Line has risen from 50,000 to 85,000 passengers.
