The violent incident occurred on the bridge near the South Stand at approximately 2.50pm, just before the Championship fixture against Millwall kicked off.

Dozens of onlookers witnessed the fight break out.

South Yorkshire Police have launched an investigation into the disturbing attack, with two individuals arrested in connection with the incident, according to the Daily Mail.

The club is cooperating with officers conducting enquiries.

The injured fan received stitches for the wound and is understood to be making a good recovery.

On the pitch, Millwall secured a 2-1 victory to boost their promotion ambitions despite falling behind.

Wednesday took the lead through Jamal Lowe, who finished from close range on the hour mark, raising hopes among home supporters of an upset against Alex Neil’s high-flying side.

The visitors fought back to claim all three points, however.

A Cole McGhee own goal drew the Lions level before Macauley Langstaff completed the turnaround with the winning strike.

The result keeps Millwall firmly in the hunt for a place in the top flight next season.

Sheffield Wednesday manager Henrik Pedersen praised his players’ display despite the disappointing outcome.

“A tough, tough opponent today – a physical monster opponent. How much physical power they can bring into the game, we knew it was the top team from the league,” he said.

“We know they are physically strong – the vertical play, second ball, set-pieces, maybe the best in the league.

“How we managed this game, how we defended, how we pressed, how we protected our own goal and all the set-pieces, for me, maybe this is the basics.

“But how when we won the ball, this threat forward, we had many more runs forward in front of the ball, many more situations where we become higher up on the pitch.

“We also create chances and scored a goal. It was very positive. How we managed this game offensively today was strong.

“We know Millwall, with the physical power, it’s a fantastic pressing team and how we played a little bit more direct, how we won a lot of second balls, against them, I think it was a strong performance from four senior players and seven young guys.”

Millwall boss Neil, meanwhile, reacted by saying: “I think I would sum it up as job done.

“I thought Sheffield Wednesday made it difficult for us. I thought we made it difficult for ourselves at times.

“Coming here there’s a lot of expectation that you’re just going to turn up. The simple fact is, apart from the last game when they played a back four, a lot of the games have been really tight.

“It’s not been plain sailing or easy for any team coming here and I didn’t expect it to be any different for us, and it was exactly what I expected.”
