Following a release date shuffle to accommodate Mike Flanagan’s demanding schedule, we finally have an update on the filmmaker’s Exorcist reboot.
It has been confirmed by multiple sources, and Flanagan himself, that Academy Award Nominee Scarlett Johansson will star in the project.
It is currently unknown what role the Avengers actress will play, but snaring a star of Johansson’s calibre is a major win for the film.
Of Johansson’s casting, Flanagan said:
“Scarlett is a brilliant actress whose captivating performances always feel grounded and real, from genre films to summer blockbusters, and I couldn’t be happier to have her join this Exorcist film.”
This is the first substantial update we’ve had on Flanagan’s Exorcist offering in a while, as the filmmaker has been busy with his Carrie adaption for Amazon MGM.
Johansson’s casting is a step in the right direction for the IP, as all involved seek to re-invent The Exorcist following the failure of 2023’s reboot The Exorcist: Believer.
Believer was meant to be the first in a planned trilogy from Halloween director David Gordon Green. However, following underwhelming box-office and scathing critical reviews, the sequel plans were quietly abandoned.
Blumhouse Productions, Morgan Creek Entertainment, and Universal Pictures are now putting their faith in Flanagan and Johansson to save their $400 million investment. However, should Flanagan also fall by the seemingly cursed franchise, all parties involved may have to sell the rights back to Warner Bros.
So, with the pressure on, will Mike Flanagan finally produce a worthy follow up to “the scariest movie ever made?” We’re admittedly curious to find out.
Flanagan’s untitled Exorcist project was initially set to release in March 2026, but is currently without a release date.
Watch this space for further updates.
