SBS orders Bondi documentary exploring Australia’s worst terror attack

SBS is moving to document one of the darkest moments in modern Australian history, with a feature documentary now in development examining the Bondi terror attack.

The project is being developed with award winning production company Mint Pictures and will tell the story through the voices of those directly affected.

Announced during the Australian International Documentary Conference in Melbourne, Bondi (working title) will examine the events of December 14 at Bondi Beach and the devastating impact on survivors, families, first responders and the wider community.

The film will draw on firsthand testimony and archive material, with SBS promising unparalleled access that aims to deepen understanding of the attack and the acts of courage that emerged in its aftermath.

SBS Head of Unscripted Joseph Maxwell said the broadcaster saw the documentary as an important national record shaped by those who lived through the tragedy.

“This was an unprecedented event that shattered so many lives across Australia, and particularly the Australian Jewish community.”

Mint Pictures Creative Director Dan Goldberg said the film would focus on the people whose lives were forever changed by the events of that day and the broader social context surrounding it, including rising antisemitism in the lead up to the attack.

“With Bondi, our intention is to create a deeply human account shaped by the voices of survivors, families and first responders.”

The attack at Bondi Beach on December 14 left multiple people dead, injured others including police officers, and sent shockwaves through communities across Australia.

The Australian International Documentary Conference, held this week at ACMI in Melbourne and wrapping up today, brings together local and international creators, broadcasters and buyers focused on documentary and factual storytelling.

Further details about Bondi (working title) will be announced by the Broadcaster at a later date.
