SBS confirms DR NICHOLAS PAPPAS AM as new board Chair

SBS has confirmed a new chair for its board, with current director Nicholas Pappas stepping up to lead the national broadcaster’s governing body.

News of the appointment was confirmed late Friday afternoon after Minister for Communications and Sport Anika Wells announced Pappas would take on the role as Chair of the SBS Board.

He has served as a Non Executive Director on the SBS Board since December 2024 and now moves into the top governance role at the public broadcaster.

A lawyer and company director, Pappas brings extensive board experience across a range of Australian business, cultural and community organisations.

His current roles include serving as Chair of the South Sydney Rabbitohs and President Emeritus of The Hellenic Initiative Australia, alongside a number of other board positions.

He also serves as a Non Executive Director of the Steve Waugh Foundation and Melbourne’s Hellenic Museum, and has previously held roles with the Powerhouse Museum and the Bank of Sydney.

The appointment follows the departure of former SBS Chair George Savvides AM, who stepped down in July 2025 after eight years with the broadcaster.

The appointment was welcomed by other board members including Deputy Chair Christine Zeitz, Vic Alhadeff OAM, Aaron Fa’Aoso, Dr Andrew Lu AM, Katrina Rathie and Cassandra Wilkinson OAM, along with Acting Managing Director Jane Palfreyman.

Deputy Chair Christine Zeitz has been serving as Acting Chair since that time while a permanent appointment was finalised.

Pappas officially commenced in the role on 5 March 2026.
