Salman Iqbal’s Loan Announcement Amid Crisis Ignites Criticism

On Saturday, a fire broke out at one of Karachi’s most famous shopping complexes, Gul Plaza, around 10:30 p.m., which quickly engulfed the building from all four sides. Rescue teams arrived at the scene but were unable to contribute effectively due to the intensity of the fire. Reportedly, 65 people have lost their lives and 80 are still missing, while all 1,200 shops, along with the structure, building, and goods, have been completely burnt. People are still searching for the remains of their loved ones, and heart-wrenching stories are circulating on social media.

Recently, ARY’s CEO Salman Iqbal made a loan announcement for Gul Plaza victims. Talking to the press, he said, “The Gul Plaza tragedy is the tragedy of all Pakistanis. It is the supplier market for the whole of Pakistan. These are bulk business dealers, which means around 13 crore rupees have been lost. I met women in person who were running their households through their businesses. I talked to the governor to grant a loan of 5 to 6 billion rupees. I asked for a loan grant because this city never begs; that is why I asked for loans. Around 60,000 people have been affected by the Gul Plaza tragedy.” Watch here:

Social media users are calling out Salman Iqbal for offering loans instead of donations after the loss of so many precious lives and billions of rupees. One user wrote, “Keep this money to yourself. You can’t even imagine the loss, because this loss can never be fulfilled. Shame on people like you.” Another wrote, “Loan means you will get double money collection.” Another commented that he should instead return the looted money from the ARY Laguna project. One user asked, “Is he really offering a loan amid this crisis situation?” Many also said that such people forget their announcements and promises after making them. Read comments.
