Roy Keane has posted a moving tribute to his mother Marie, who died on Friday at Marymount Hospice in Cork.

The former Manchester United captain shared a photograph on Instagram showing himself with his arm around Marie, who was seated in a wheelchair with a blanket across her lap.

Both appeared smiling in the image.

His caption read simply: “You’ll always be the boss.”

The 54-year-old had previously described his mother as “the only boss I listen to” in a similar post during a visit to his hometown in January 2022.

Marie passed away surrounded by her family at the Cork hospice, with a notice on confirming she would be “sadly missed by her loving family, sisters Ina, Annette and Josephine, brothers Jack, Leo, Michael and Noel, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, daughters-in-law Linda, Theresa and Mary, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives, her great neighbours and friends.”

Her husband Maurice, known as Mossie, had died in 2019 aged 79 following a stroke the previous year.

The Keane family remained exceptionally close, with Roy frequently returning to Ireland to spend time with his mother.

During an episode of the Stick to Football podcast last year, the former midfielder became visibly emotional upon discovering a photograph of his parents whilst sorting through memorabilia from his playing career.

Several of Roy Keane’s former Manchester United colleagues responded to his Instagram post with messages of support.

David Beckham and Gary Neville both commented with heart emojis.

Former Republic of Ireland striker Robbie Keane added a heart and prayer emoji.

Olympic champion Sir Mo Farah and ex-footballer Anton Ferdinand also offered their sympathies.

Keane had been scheduled to appear as a pundit on ITV for England’s friendly against Uruguay at Wembley on Friday evening, but was withdrawn following the news.

Presenter Mark Pougatch addressed viewers before kick-off, saying: “Everyone here and all of us at ITV sends our condolences to Roy and his family on the sad passing of his mother Marie.

“All of our thoughts are with the Keane family this evening.”

Rockmount AFC, the Cork schoolboy club where Keane began his footballing journey, were among the first to express their sympathies, stating: “Sincere condolences to extended Keane and Lynch family on the passing of Marie.”

The visitation will be held at O’Connor Bros. Funeral Home, North Gate Bridge, on Monday evening from 6pm to 7pm.

A requiem mass will follow on Tuesday at 11am at the Church of the Resurrection in Farranree, with burial afterwards at St Catherine’s Cemetery in Kilcully, County Cork.

The family has asked that donations be made to Marymount Hospice rather than flowers.
