Recall issued for Alula baby reflux, colic and constipation formula amid contamination fears

A recall alert has been issued for two types of baby formula amid fears it contains a toxin that can cause nausea and vomiting.

Sanulac Nutritionals Australia Pty Ltd has recalled bathes of Alula Gold Reflux infant formula 900g (0-12 months) and Alula Colic & Constipation infant formula 850g (0-12 months).

The warning is for Alula Gold Reflux with the use by date of 17.03.2027 and batch number 8000003387.

For the Alula Colic & Constipation, the use by is 17.03.2027 and batch number is 8000003407.

No other Alula batches or products are affected by this recall.

The formulas potentially contain a toxin cereulide, which is produced by the Bacillus cereus microorganism, and can trigger vomiting, diarrhoea or unusual lethargy.

Symptoms might appear between 30 minutes to six hours after exposure and typically resolve within 24 hours.

Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) said the recall comes after international action by Lactalis.

“The potential presence of the cereulide toxin has been linked to an ingredient used in the Alula products, the same situation which led to a recent recall of specialist infant formula products,” acting CEO Christel Leemhuis said.

“Cereulide can cause gastrointestinal illness but there have been no reports of associated illness in Australia.

“Other formula products not affected by the recall are available from retailers and parents and carers can contact their health care provider or pharmacist to discuss what’s best for their baby.”

The products have been available for sale in Coles, Woolworths, pharmacies and amazon nationally and online.

The Alula Gold Reflux product has also been available at independent retailers including IGA, Big W and Costco nationally.

If anyone has these particular products the FSANZ warns not to consume it and should return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.

It comes weeks after Nestle issued a recall for its 400g tins of Alfamino Infant Formula — manufactured in Switzerland for children aged up to 12 months living with milk allergies or a food intolerance — after fears it contained the same toxin.

Parents or carers concerned about the health of their infant should seek medical advice, FSANZ said.
